The complete guide
Corten edging: the complete guide
Weathering steel was developed so bridges and buildings would not need painting. Exposed to the weather it forms a stable rust-coloured skin that protects the steel underneath, and then it stops. That is why corten edging has the warm, settled look people want, and why it is used by professional landscapers.

6-inch face height

How to fit it
- Mark your line with string and clear weeds and loose stones.
- Check for shallow pipes or cables before you drive spikes in.
- Put gloves on. Rusted steel marks hands and clothes.
- Stand the first section on the line and drive the spikes in with a rubber mallet.
- Slot the next section into the overlap and drive its spikes in. Carry on along the line, bending each section to follow a curve if you need to.
- For a short run, cut with a grinder or hacksaw. The cut edge will weather to match within a season.
Where it works
Between lawn and bed. Along a gravel path. Around a raised bed of bark or stone, where the 6-inch face earns its keep. Around trees and native plantings, where the colour sits well against green. It holds fast in all normal soils and bends to virtually any shape.
Things to know about corten
The rust settles. Weathering steel is designed to form its skin and then stop, so it does not keep thinning the way plain steel would. It needs no paint or coating, ever, and the steel is fully recyclable.
Run-off can mark pale surfaces. In the first season, rain washing over corten can leave a tint on light concrete or pavers. Keep the edging a little back from pale paving, or accept a bit of patina.
It bends. The 0.06-inch section follows a curve by hand as you fit it and holds the shape once the spikes are in.
Is it right for the job?
If you want a black line instead of rust, the black steel edging is the same section with a black coating. Beside pale pavers, the stainless edging avoids any risk of marks. For tight curves, the flexible plastic edging bends further. For a border that looks like it has always been there, this is the one.
Looking after it
Nothing to do. Knock off soil now and then and check the sections are still locked together after a hard frost.
